RECORD SLEEVE EXPLORATION
I set myself a creative challenge by designing a vintage record cover with a modern twist, envisioning it as if it were created in 2022. Given Joni Mitchell's headlines in regards to leaving Spotify, I decided to transform one of my favorite albums, Blue, into an album cover that looks like it would belong to an alternative or dreampop artist of today like Wet, Tennis, or Haim. This task proved to be a challenge as a lot of these artists choose to rely on vintage vaporwave-esque imagery, or classic serif fonts. But by collaging Joni's portraits with cloudy source photos, and introducing contemporary serifs (Flower Power), I was able to create a surrealistic dreamscape worthy of Joni Mitchell's daydreamy lyrics, as well as the latest trendy Spotify playlist.
Conversely, I set out on a personal challenge to reimagine a contemporary album cover in the style of a vintage record. Using Kacey Musgraves' 2021 album, Star-Crossed, as my starting point, this project allowed me to explore various Photoshop techniques, including texture and blending mode experimentation, bevel and emboss effects, shadowing and color replacement. Additionally, I applied fundamental design principles such as typographic hierarchy and balance to create a visually appealing album cover layout that captures the essence of a bygone era.
